Pharynx & Esophagus
1) structure of the pharynx
Divided into a nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx
2) swallowing mechanism
3 stages
A. Food is mixed with saliva and forced in oropharynx
B. Involuntary reflex move food into esophagus
C. Peristalsis transports food to stomach
3) Esophagus
Passes through diaphragm and joins the stomach
Circular muscle fibers at the distal end of the esophagus help prevent regurgitation of food from stomach.
