This amphibian's common name is the American toad. The American toad has short legs, stout bodies, and thick skin with warts that are easily visible. The skin of the American toad is normally a shade of brown but it can vary. American toads are nocturnal a majority of the time. They are out when the weather is hot and humid. American toads hide under rocks, soil, logs, or dead leaves during the day. During the winter they dig deeper to hibernate.

This American Toad was found on the sidewalk of my neighborhood.

However, American toads have been found throughout large portions of eastern United States and most areas of eastern Canada.

This map shows that American toads are common where it is shaded brown.
