In World War One Hungary sided with Germany and Austria.
In 1918 the Monarchy dissolved and the first Hungarian government was put in place, a democracy, creating the republic of Hungary.
After losing the war, Hungary was split up according to the treaty of Trianon. The large country of more than 20 million was split up left with a country of 8 million. Hungary is in the shape we recognize it as today
In World War Two Hungary sided with Germany against the soviets. Fearing the worst, Hungary tried to switch to the Allies. Knowing of the betrayal, Germany invaded Hungary, killing thousands and sending many to concentration camps.
After Germany lost the soviets took over Hungary, pushing out the Germans and staying for 44 years. In 1956, an unsuccessful attempt at independence resulted in unmerciful punishment. The rebellion had some minor affects, which lead to success in an independent attempt in 1989.
In 1999 Hungary joined NATO
In 2004 they became a member of the European Union.
