At first the rules were that players weren't allowed to bounce the ball. By 1901 rules permitted to allow players to bounce the ball once. After the ball was bounced they were required to pass the ball, and weren't allowed to shoot. There was no limit of how many times they could bounce it, so they took advantage of it. Later on 1909 they were allowed to male continuous dribbling.
