Janissary Corps

As the Ottoman State became larger and more established, they created a slave army. They required the Christians living in the Balkans to contribute young boys to become slaves of the sultan and forced them to convert to Islam, learn Turkish, and receive special training. Some went on to work in the administration while others entered the Janissary Corps, whose members were used during battles and sieges.
