As time goes on, most of the boys stop caring about the fire on the mountain which is the only way they can be rescued. These boys start caring only about meat and killing pigs. Their 'society' dissolves in to anarchy and most of the boys become the complete opposite of what they once were. Their personalities at the beginning of the novel describe what boarding school is like: well ordered and rule following. By the end of the novel most of the boys become nothing more than animals, driven nearly mad by their desire for meat and death.
