Millennialism

People tried to guess the second coming of Jesus and therefore the date that the world would end. William Miller gained followers by predicting a specific date, October 21 1844. The followers are known as the Seventh- Day Adventist.

The Mormons

Founded by Joseph Smith and also called the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints. This religion was based on the Book of Mormon, which traced a link between the lost tribes of Israel and the native Americans. The Mormons spread their religion from New York to Ohio to Missurri and finically to Illinious, where Smith was killed by a mob. Established the New Zion in Utah on the banks of the Great Salt Lake. Clashed with US government because they practiced polygamy.

Utopia

The idea that one could, with a few others, pull away from the world to creat an ideal community where one could think and relax and explore the ways of simple communal living. The Mormons are an example of a religious communal movement whereas Book Farm is an example of a humanist or secular experiment. Other examples include: Shakers, the Amana Colonies, New Harmony, and the Oneida Community.
