"The Great Game"
Although "The Great Game" between Russia and British never occurred, it's effects were very impactful. Russian and British explorers ventured into parts of central Asia never before visited by Europeans. They mapped terrain and formed alliances with local rulers from Afghanistan to the Aral Sea. Through this, much of central Asia was brought into the Russian empire and subjected to a Russian hegemony that persisted until the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991.Competition among European powers led also to further adm tighter imperialism in southeast Asia, as the Spanish and Dutch gained more control of colonies.
