~What is known as “research on missions in the Middle East” has been recognized as early as the beginning decades of the 19th century.
~The works of the three authors that wrote on the subject of the Middle East, Jowett (1825) and Smith andn Dwight (1833_, have such words in their titles as “Mission research”.
~However these works are contained not so much the mission itself, bur tauter ideas on the subject go missions and the circumstances that would effect missionaries in that region.
~ And so it can be said that real missionary work began in the Middle East in the latter half of the 18th century.
~The American Board of Commissioners for foreign missions sent missionaries to the region and in 1872, began to compile a volume on the work accomplished in the previous few decades.
~This example was followed by other religious organizations that began to send missionaries and report on them such as the Church Missionary society, The American Presbyterian Missions, The London Jews Society, and the American and German Lutheran works.
