The Daintree rainforest is home to one of the highest populations of primitive flowering plants in the world. Of 19 primitive plant families on earth, 12 are found in the Daintree.
One of the most primitive and rare of all flowering plants in the Daintree Rainforest, is called the Idiot fruit. It has a nut-like, apple sized fruits that are highly toxic. This fruit is as old as the rainforest, around 135 million years old. The tree is largely responsible for the designation of the Daintree as a World Heritage Area.
