Egas Moniz

won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1949

The Portuguese neurologist António Egas Moniz is credited with inventing the lobotomy in 1935.

Moniz reported the treatment as a success for patients with conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, panic disorder and mania despite the often severe and life threatenting side effects. Some of these side effects included increased body temperature, vomiting, bladder and bowel incontinence and eye problems, as well apathy, lethargy, and abnormal sensations of hunger.
