The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1–3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The confederate were convinced they had the union. From the recent run of victories Lee of convinced that a win on northern soil would force the union to end the war. Lee guided his troops into Pennsylvania, but the new union General George Meade pursed. The confederates were looking for shoes, but instead encountered the union. By the evening the confederates picked up there winning mentality and pushed northerner deep into Gettysburg. The next day 85,000 union solders met 75,000 confederate soldiers. They fought into the next day when Lee ordered an all out attack on union soldiers. Union artillery killed of 7,500 of Lee's soldiers. At the end of this battle, the confederacy suffered 28,000 casualties which led to the surrender from Lee and Grant's siege of Vicksburg. The blood was on the overly confident confederate hands.
