El Anatsui

One of Africa’s most influential sculptors, Ghanaian artist El Anatsui is at the forefront of the contemporary art scene, having received considerable international acclaim for his unusual and highly-identifiable sculptural works. A professor in the Sculpture El Anatsui gained worldwide recognition in the early 2000s for his shimmering, monumental wall hangings, visual feasts rich with associations to Africa, Europe, and America. These expansive sheets, hung in undulating swags and blocky folds, are composed of countless bits of brightly colored metal. The link between Europe Africa and America is behind much of his work.

Many popular artist in Ghana use a lot of the techniques used by Anatsui today by implementing vibrant colors and ideas from art work in Europe and America as well as keeping traditional techniques of the Ghanaian people.
