In addition to the common schools, there was the Second Great Awakening. It was a religious revival in New England. They promoted 3 key things: sobriety, productivity, and self-discipline. The Second Great Awakening prompted many people to turn away from sin and seek salvation from God. One popular religion that took off during the time was the shakers. They promoted celibacy and equality in all aspects of life. These religious groups also led to other movements such as the anti- slavery and temperance movement because drunkenness and slavery were seen as sins by this group.
