German nationalism
- Before unification, Nationalism was practiced
- Nationalistic characteristics disappeared after unification
- Bismarck supported militarism
- disliked universal suffrage and saw it as a threat
- South German states practiced a liberal constitution
- as a result, movement towards Democracy grew among those regions
- Religion also played a big role in decreasing the practices of nationalism
- Catholics living In Europe felt uncomfortable living among Protestants
- they then created their own political party called the Central Party
- the part opposed much of Bismarck's ideas
- Both Catholics and Protestants disliked Bismarck for putting restrictions on religion
