I was one of the first to disembark off the ship onto Ellis Island because I had very little baggage. As I ascended the stairs to the Registry Room I became more and more nervous about the medical inspection as I saw many people being marked with chalk. I soon found out I had nothing to worry about though; the doctor examined me for no more than a minute before passing me on. I then went to line up for my legal inspection. When I reached the inspectors's desk I was immediately bombarded with questions such as: Are you traveling alone? Who are you staying with? Where are you staying? I was sure I would be detained but when I showed my mother's letter and map I was permitted through.
