The first thing I saw was the Statue of Liberty; all of the tired passengers cheered as we sailed past it. When the ship finally docked after months at sea, I felt a mixture of excitement and fear. Our ship dropped anchor outside the Narrows and a quarantine officer boarded the ship to check for signs of disease. Doctors then came aboard to examine the first and second class passengers. They were given permission to go, leaving the rest of us steerage-class passengers alone on the ship. There we waited for three days before we were ferried to Ellis Island for further inspection. Luckily, when we arrived at Ellis Island we were able to disembark immediately unlike other less fortunates who were confined to waiting on barges.
