How Did Feudalism start in these Areas?

Japan

Western Europe

- In Japan during the Heian Period the centralized government began to break down as great landowners and powerful people collected armies which terrorized the population. Small landowners would pay strong warlords with land to protect them. This made warlords more powerful and feudalism bloomed.

- Feudalism began in Western Europe mostly in the 9th and 10th centuries when Viking armies were terrorizing land areas. To calm the chaos the French king, Charles the Simple rewarded the Vikings with land if they pledged loyalty to him. More and more landowners made the same agreement with the Vikings. From these contracts, the societal system of Feudalism emerged.
