What if the transcontinental railroad failed? Would the U.S. try to make another one? Would the U.S. be the same as it is today?

Over the years, you can see that the miles of railroad tracks laid down increase from 1840-1930. Ever since the transcontinental railroad started (1862) the number gradually rose in higher numbers. When the railroad finished in 1869, many others starting building railroad tracks, booming the miles of track up to around 100,000,000. The transcontinental railroad seemed to have made railroads more popular, according to the graph.
