Why/how fossils are preserved

Fossils become fossils through a process called "petrifaction" or when they are "preserved without change", when they don't change. Petrification is when an organism is completely replaced by minerals. If only a small hole is open in the bone/she'll, then the added mineral can make the bone/she'll more compact or stone like.

Humans preserve fossils so that they can learn more obout the past and the history of that place. Paleontologists study they fossil to determine what animal it came from and to learn about the behavioral traits of that animal. And clues about what happened to that animal, like how it died, from being hunted, or fighting.
