Solution

Jamie and Claudia decide to go to Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler's house because the statue used to belong to her. When they got there it took a while to convince her to tell them. She made them search in a short amount of time through her files, and eventually they found out that it truly was work of Michelangelo.
