Elephants store heat by allowing their body temperature to rise during the day time. This can be lethal as gigantic animals are predisposed to storage of metabolic heat in core tissues.

Thermoregulatory Behaviours

To reduce heat gain elephants will seek shade (even be nocturnal to avoid radiation from the sun), bathe themselves in water, fan themselves with their ears, or roll about in any muddy areas available.
