Disturbance + Restoring Force

Waves form when something disturbs the normal state of a medium, and a restoring force tries to bring it back to equilibrium. The interplay between these two creates the wave motion we observe.

• Disturbance: wind, vibration, or impact

• Restoring force: gravity, tension, or elasticity

• Wave motion: the back-and-forth between disturbance and restoration
