The Box of the Jewel Hand symbolizes youth and immortality. In this story, Urashima opens the Box and little wisps (his youth and immortality) escape and then vanishing across the sea. This symbol is very important to the story because it represents the idea of with life there always must be death. For example in the story the Urashima is able to cheat death by escaping to a magical palace and being granted to live forever by the Princess of the Sea. But in the end Urashima comes back to the mainland and has to die due to the balance of life.
