Montini served in the Vatican Secretariat of State in 1922. During that time, he was considered the most influential co-workers of Pope Pius XII. He was then named Archbishop of Milan which was a huge Italian Diocese, but wasn't named a cardinal yet. In 1958, Pope John XIII moved him to the College of Cardinals, and after John's death, he was named the most likely successor of him. Montini before his Papacy, took the name Paul VI to indicate a renewal of Christ's mission for all. Paul did whatever he could to speak to other countries around the world. He saw himself as “a humble servant for a suffering humanity" and he demanded that changes in North America and Europe.
