Seasonal mood variations are believed to be related to light. Light therapy is being used to try and correct the delay that people with S. A. D. have in their circadian rhythm.
Many other theories about why some people develop S. A. D. are being studied. A lack of serotonin and serotonin polymorphisms is one possibility of the occurrence. Another theory that may be related to the cause could be melatonin production.
