The mongoose evolved from a common ancestor of the civets and the mongoose. The mongoose also resembles weasels, minks, otters, and skunks. These animals are more distantly related. The civets are more closely related. I predict that in a million years or so, the mongoose that are semi aquatic, will evolve and become fully aquatic. Becoming fully aquatic will improve the mongoose because the mongoose will be able to reach the food that they couldn't get from before and it will be easier to get the food.
