Trench Warfare

Soldiers fought from close range from ditches that were dug into the war. These were known as trenches. Army strategies that involved moving forward did not work anymore because of modern machine guns, artillery, and poisonous gas. Trenches protected soldiers from modern weapons. Because both sides stayed in position inside trenches, it created a form of stalemate. Soldiers stayed in trenches and tried to shoot others or throw grenades into opposing enemy trenches.
