Transportation
During the 1850s most texans continued to ride horseback or in wagons pulled by horses, mules, or oxen. Many towns were served by stagecoaches, which carried a few passengers, some freight, and mail. Texans did not see improvement in transportation.
Railroad construction began in Texas in the 1850s. By 1860 about 400 miles of track were in service, railroads constructed in the 1850s were laid in a spider-web fashion around Galveston and Houston. These railroads mainly transported products to the ports and to the market.
