Rural Life in Texas

Between 1846 and 1860 nearly all the Texas were living on farms or ranches. During this time, many texans farmed or raised cattle on their own land since it was available and inexpensive.
Most of the farmers in Texas focused on growing there crops. Corn was the largest food crop in Texas and was a major part of their diet. Cotton was the primary cash crop in Texas.
Raising livestock was an important aspect of farming in Texas. Most of the farmers raised milk cows, hogs, and chickens to provide food. Many texans began raising their livestock for profit. They started ranches where they raised herds of cattle and they raised sheep for wool.
Camels were used in Texas by the U.S. Army in the 1850s.
