They can be passed from one person to another during vaginal and anal sex.
It can be spread by skin to skin contact, so it can be passed on by close genital contact (you don't need to have penetrative sex).
It will not pass through a condom but as you know condoms do not cover the entire genital area so it is possible to infect genital skin if it is not covered properly with a condom.
It is most likely to be passed on when the warts are present but it can be passed on if they have disappeared.
It is also possible to get warts in the mouth, throat or lips through oral sex.
It is possible for a pregnant woman who has genital warts to pass it on to her baby.
