Characters
Tim O'Brien- Narrator and protagonist of the story. Dynamic character that first is afraid to go to war and is scared but ends up realizing that throughout the war he has become cold and hard on the inside. This is shown when he realizes he wants revenge on the medic that treated his wound incorrectly.
Jimmy Cross- Lieutenant Cross is the leader of the Alpha Company. Cross is a dynamic character because he realizes, after Ted Lavender dies, that Martha doesn’t love him and stops staring at her picture. He starts forcing his men to follow protocol and looking out for them better.
Kiowa- Kiowa is described as a Native American Baptist who always carries an illustrated copy of the New Testament. He is a close friend to O’Brien. Kiowa is a static character who doesn’t change while he is present in the novel. He dies early on but shows no change before his death.
Norman Bowker - He is dynamic because throughout the actual war he seems normal and quite. However, he has trouble adjusting when the war is over and experiences what is known as survivor guilt. He feels guilty for outliving his friends and eventually kills himself.
Mitchell Sanders- The radio officer of the Alpha Company. He is known for telling stories without any real point. He is the voice of experience and wisdom in the Alpha Company. He is a static character who doesn’t change in the novel.
