Mount Vesuvius, a volcano located in the Gulf of Naples near Italy, is a part of the Campanian Volcanic Arc. Mount Vesuvius last erupted in 1944; however, it's most famous eruption occurred in 79 AD. This devastating eruption claimed the lives of an estimated 16,000 people and completely destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Hurculaneum.
