Gupta empire

- Ruled from 320 A.D to 540
- The Golden age
- Children were taught in religious schools, but in Buddhist and Hindu learning wasn't limited to religion and philosophy
-Learned mathematics, medicine, physics, etc.
- The Gupta mathematicians devised the system of writing numbers that we use today
- They originated the concept of zero and the decimal system based on ten digits, we still use this today
- Doctors used herbs and other remedies to cure illness
-They began vaccinating for smallpox 1,000 years earlier than Europe
- They wrote in Sanskrit language and their greatest poet and playwright was Kalidasa
- Eventually declined due to war, weak rulers, and invaders
- The invaders that overran Gupta were the White Huns
