Popularity of the dulcimer soared in 1950 during a sort of folk music Renaissance. This was largely thanks to Jean Ritchie, who exposed New Yorkers to this instrument and the culture associated with it. She sold dulcimers created by Jethro Amburgey, her relative in Kentucky. Eventually, they began producing the instrument themselves, with others following in their footsteps.
