The Purity Myth is the way America perceives the loss of virginity as, as they promote the idea that the worth of a woman is dictated by her sexual behavior. This implies that losing one's virginity has a negative impact. Based on the book, society views virginity as the main focus of what a girl of any age's worth is surrounded by, rather than standard values such as honesty, trust, respect, etc.... Most often, the majority of people who remain pure until marriage, or for their entire lives, are female. Women are often revered for being sexually active, men are not. However when a man decides to remain pure, he is seen as weak, foolish, and a loser. Because the Purity Myth infers that a women's worth is based off weather she is sexually active or not, it also infers that a girl's reputation is defined by her sexual life. However the media plays a large role in the purity myth as well. The media tends to sexualize women, making them appear sexy, even if they are not sexually active. However if their sex life is not hidden, they are ripped apart by the media.
