Describe

The Scream

By: Van Gogh, 1893

Analyze

Interpret

In this painting, a man is out on a boardwalk/bridge at dusk and is screaming with his hand over his ears. Van Gogh uses swirled lines and complementing colors in his painting.

~ Man is center of gravity/painting
~ All lines are formed around him
~ Wavy, rushing water movement
~ Emphasis on man, especially face
~ Brightness of the sky against dreary colors give variety

I think in this painting, Van Gogh was trying to show that the man is being drowned in his own world. The way all the lines are swirled around him and his desperate screaming conveys an anxious, fearful emotion.
