-historians called this period the Classic Age
-cities in the highland traded with those in the lowland
-chocolate was known as food of rulers and gods
-Maya cities battled each other to gain land & power
-Pacal was a ruler of a huge temple
-built structures to improve life
-each city had its own government and its own king
-had grand buildings, including large stone pyramids, temples & palaces
