Cotton and sugar cane was the primary cash crop in Texas.

In 1850 fewer than 13,000 people lived in towns by 1860 it had jumped to 26,000. Each town had a few homes general stores,blacksmiths trade shops, and doctors. They were all built out of logs or lumber
