The picture shows a western african girl clutching a flower in her right left hand. Her eyes show deep sadness.

At first glance you see a young girl clearly African, holding a flower with some flags in back and the sun rising from behind. It's a happy picture, but then after sitting and looking at the art work for awhile you notice that the eyes are compelling, they pierce deep. You get the sense that there is something hidden beneath the surface. She looks a little sad, it makes you wonder why. Why the sadness? Why the intensity of the eyes? Perhaps corruption, famine, poverty.

What I see in the picture is a young girl who is supposed to be celebrating and rejoicing, but somehow looks sad. Her eyes and facial expressions look tired as if she's been thinking about a sad part of her life for a long time. Her expression is hard but yet wounded.
