Akela was the leader of the wolf pack in The Jungle Book; he had adopted Mowgli and they became very close friends. Akela protected him from Shere Khan the tiger for a long time, but he then decided to hunt alone after some members tried to overthrow him; Mowgli went to the human village around this time. Years later, when Mowgli is later rejected by humanity and comes back to the forest to fight the wild dogs attacking the pack, the lone Akela jumps into battle, then dies in Mowgli's presence.
Almondine is similar to Akela in that she is like a leader to the other dogs, yet she doesn't really interact with the other dogs. She wishes to stay by Edgar's side (who can be symbolically seen as Mowgli) even when he abandons her.
