Krakauer- is relating a story, giving people facts, so his writing is shorter, more to-the-point (but still is able to provide advanced detail when needed)
- prefers simple sentences to keep people reading for the facts
- is able to use complex with simple sentences, ability from being a journalist-simple and a full-fledged author

Krakauer's purpose was to relay a story about Chris McCandless.

Thoreau- focused on ideas, tried to teach people philosophy, his 'true' way, so his writing isn't concerned with keeping people interested, if they aren't interested, they aren't worthy.
- writing was much more expanded, encompassed more detail.
- preferred complex sentences that could encorporate more thought

There was not a lot of purpose to Thoreau's Walden. His relates more to his time period.
