-They left for America between 1860 and 1870
-Increasing and improving technology drove them to America
-Malaria spread across the country
-Farming became less profitable in Italy
-Many people became poor
-Houses were referred to as "No more than shacks with windows"
-Many people would have to share their "shacks" with their animals
