The monsoon season was the source of most of post classical India's water supply. During the spring and summer months, winds from the southwest brought warm, moist air. It would rain for days on end, thouroughly soaking the land. As a result, crops flourished. However, during the dry months, famine and drought could only be prevented through extensive irrigation systems.
