The Cuban Missile Crisis started when the Soviet Union(USSR) began to install nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962. The United States refused to allow this and after many negotiations throughout 13 days the Soviet Union got rid of the missiles. This is perhaps the closest that the United States and the Soviet Union came to nuclear war during the Cold war.
