Black carpenters, cooks, guards, laborers, nurses, scouts, spies, steamboat pilots, surgeons, and chaplains contributed to the war cause.

African American families often were forced the separate. The women would go to cook and prepare attire for the soldiers. The men would fight in the war. And children would tag along with there mothers.
