The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a failed military invasion of Cuba on April 17, 1961. Launched from Guatemala, the invading force was defeated within three days of the Cuban armed forces. The failed invasion strengthened the position of Castro's administration, who later openly said that he had an intention to adopt socialism and strengthened ties with the Soviet Union.
