On April 4, 1949 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was signed. NATO is an intergovernmental military alliance which was based off of the North Atlantic Treaty. The organization constitutes a system of collective defense where its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by an external party.
