John Reed is the worst of the three children, and is a terror not only to Jane, but even his mother.
Jane comments on page 34 how John, "bluntly disregarded her wishes; not unfrequently tore and spoiled her silk attire; and he was still “her own darling." John is the exact opposite of Jane, and represents the double-standard of boys vs. girls. Even though Jane is outspoken, she is not disobedient or vicious. John, on the other hand is, yet he is able to remain the apple of his mother's eye.
BESSIE AND MISS ABBOTT AND MR. LLOYD
Bessie and Miss Abbott are servants/maids of Gateshead. Miss Abbott is more loyal to the Reeds, but Bessie is the first glimpse of kindness that Jane gets in her life. Mr. Lloyd and Bessie both represent an outsider's point of view about Jane. The Reeds for some reason are biased against her (a theme that will occur again at Lowood), and so is Miss. Abbott. Bessie and Mr. Lloyd show Jane that there are people in the world who are good and fair. Mr. Lloyd is important, because without his intervention, Jane may have never left Gateshead.
