Jane Eyre is an orphaned child who lives with her Aunt and cousins in Gateshead Manor. Shockingly outspoken, Jane is ostracized by her family, and tends to spend her time reading quietly to herself. Her cousin John is a terror, and one day throws a book at Jane. Instead of "taking it on the chin" (as girls of that time period would be expected to do), Jane furiously retaliates. As a result, she is thrown into the Red Room as punishment.
The Red Room is where her uncle died, so it's considered haunted. We learn that Jane was sent to live with the Reeds after her parents died, and before her uncle did as well, he made his wife promise to look after [Jane]. The anxiety of the "haunted" air of the room, plus Jane's overall feeling of sadness causes her to have a panic attack. She pleads to be removed from the room, but she is ignored. She eventually faints.
When she wakes, Mr. Lloyd, the family doctor is tending to her. Through a series of questions, Mr. Lloyd believes that Jane should leave Gateshead and attend a school. Jane is excited, and Mrs.Reed also approves the idea.
